The Ultimate Dog Owner’s Checklist for Weekend Walks What to pack, including the Poo-ch Pouch

Saturday morning optimism
There is something about a weekend walk that feels like a tiny reset button. The kettle goes on, the dog does that hopeful little dance by the door, and you suddenly believe you are the sort of person who definitely has their life together.
Then you step outside and realise you have forgotten the poo bags. Again.
So, here is my relaxed, real world checklist. Not the sort that makes you feel guilty. More the sort that saves you a wet sleeve, a hungry dog, and an awkward chat with another walker.
The basics you reach for without thinking
Lead and collar are obvious, until they are not. I keep a spare lead by the door because I once spent ten minutes searching the house while my dog sighed like a disappointed headmaster.
Bags for mess are non negotiable. I clip a Poo-ch Pouch to the lead so I am not rummaging around in pockets like a Victorian street urchin. It is small and neat, and it keeps things simple, which is what you want when your dog has picked the exact busiest moment to do their business.
Treats are next. Not a whole buffet, just a small handful. Even if your dog is an angel, you will meet a squirrel with big opinions.
And water. If you are heading out for more than a quick loop, take a bottle and something your dog can drink from. A fold up bowl is nice, but I have used my cupped hands plenty of times, to be honest.
Bits for you, because you matter too
Phone and keys, obviously. Also, a tissue or two, because noses run and dogs find mysterious smells that must be investigated with enthusiasm.
If you wear glasses, bring a cloth. There is nothing quite like a wet dog shaking beside you and leaving you looking through a foggy halo.
A snack for you is not glamorous, but it is wise. You will feel fine, then suddenly you are halfway back and daydreaming about toast.
Weather, mud, and the great British surprise
A light layer is worth its weight in gold. Our weather loves a plot twist. I often take a thin waterproof even when the sky looks friendly. It is not about looking outdoorsy. It is about not arriving home looking like a damp newspaper.
A small towel in the boot, or shoved by the front door, is a quiet hero. Muddy paws are one thing. Muddy paws on the sofa are another.
Little extras that save the day
If your dog is prone to adventure, pop a tag on their collar with your number. If you are going somewhere new, take a quick photo of them before you set off. It sounds dramatic, but it is a handy habit.
And if your walk might stretch into dusk, a tiny torch or a clip on light helps. Not because you are planning an expedition. More because it gets dark earlier than you think when you stop to chat.
Off you go
That is it. Nothing fancy. Just the small stuff that keeps a weekend wander easy and calm, even when your dog decides the best stick in the world is actually a fallen branch.
